Answers Before you decide

Who is a candidate for medically supervised weight management?

The short answer

Candidacy is decided by a licensed clinician after an assessment, and it depends on medical history, current medications, laboratory findings, pregnancy status, prior reactions and personal goals. No website, quiz or article can tell you whether treatment is appropriate for you, and any that claims to should be treated with suspicion.

This is the question most programs answer badly, usually by making the answer yes.

What a clinician is actually weighing

An honest assessment considers your medical history including conditions that change the risk calculation, every medication and supplement you take, relevant laboratory findings, pregnancy status or plans, any prior reaction to a related drug class, what you have already tried and what happened, and what you are actually trying to achieve.

None of that is a formula. It is judgment, applied by someone licensed to apply it, to your specific situation.

Why “no” is a good sign

A program whose assessment always concludes yes is not assessing. It is qualifying you for a purchase. When a clinician tells you that treatment is not appropriate, or not yet, or not before something else is investigated, that is the assessment working correctly.

There is also a middle answer that gets skipped: not this, but something else. A clinician may conclude that laboratory work comes first, that a different condition needs attention, or that a non-medication pathway fits your situation better.

What candidacy is not

It is not a number on a scale. It is not a quiz score. It is not a fixed threshold you either clear or do not. And it is not permanent: someone who is not a candidate today may be one later, and someone who is a candidate today may stop being one if their circumstances change.

What this means for how you shop

If a provider tells you that you qualify before a licensed clinician has assessed you, they have told you something important about how they operate. Keep it in mind.

This page is general education and is not medical advice. Candidacy is a clinical decision made by a licensed clinician who has assessed you.

Terms in this answer

Hover, tap or tab to any of these for a plain-language definition.

  • Clinical assessment A structured review of your history, medications, goals and eligibility by a licensed clinician, ending in a decision about whether treatment is appropriate for you. An assessment is only real if no is a possible answer.
  • GLP-1 A class of medication that acts on a hormone your body already makes to regulate blood sugar and appetite. It is prescribed only when a licensed clinician judges it appropriate for a specific person. It is one possible part of a plan, never the whole plan.
  • Metabolic health How well your body processes and regulates energy. It covers blood sugar regulation, lipids, blood pressure, sleep and how you actually feel and function. Broader than weight. Weight is one measurable output of it.

Can an online quiz tell me if I qualify?
It can tell you whether it is worth having an assessment. It cannot tell you whether treatment is appropriate for you, because that requires a licensed clinician reviewing your full picture.
What are common reasons someone is not a candidate?
Reasons vary and are individual. They can include specific medical histories, certain current medications, pregnancy or planning pregnancy, prior reactions to a drug class, and findings that need to be investigated first. Your clinician will explain the reason that applies to you.
